Yanina Wickmayer falls at 1st hurdle

The Fleming Yanina Wickmayer (WTA 35) has failed to qualify for the second round of this year’s French Open. The 22-year-old from Antwerp province lost her first round match against the Bulgarian Tsvetana Pironkova (WTA 41) in three sets 3-6, 6-0, 6-3.

Wickmayer seemed to be cruising to victory in the first set, which she led 3-1 at one stage. The set ended 3-6 in the Belgian’s favour.

However, a disastrous second set saw Wickmayer make mistake after mistake and Pironkova cruise to and easy 6-0 victory.

Wickmayer started strongly in the third set, but it was not to be and she lost 6-3. Game, set and match to the Bulgarian.

Yanina Wickmayer was the only Belgian representative in the women’s singles at this year’s French Open.

Pironkova will take on the Italian Francesca Schiavone (WTA 14) in the second round.
