“Kabila paid Prince Laurent’s hotel bill”

Friday’s editions of the dailies ‘De Morgen’ and ‘La Libre Belgique’ report that the Congolese President Joseph Kabila paid Prince Laurent’s hotel bills during his controversial trip to the Democratic Republic of Congo. The validity of the newspaper reports has been confirmed by a reliable source.

On Wednesday, it was revealed that King Albert’s youngest son Prince Laurent had made a trip to Congo last month.

The purpose of his visit was to look at sustainable development projects that are supported by a not for profit organisation that he is involved with.

On Thursday, it was revealed that Prince Laurent had met the Congolese President Joseph Kabila (bottom photo) during the trip.

However, now it appears that the Prince did more than just exchange pleasantries with President Kabila.

According to the newspaper reports, Joseph Kabila paid the hotel bills for Prince Laurent and his entourage.

During question time in the Chamber of Representatives on Thursday, Prime Minister Yves Leterme (Flemish Christian democrat) said that Prince Laurent “had enjoyed “privileges and facilities that are linked to his statues”, despite his visit to Congo supposedly having been private.

The controversial Belgian businessman Georges Forest is also reported to have helped the Prince during his stay in Congo.

Prince Laurent was given use of Mr Forest’s private jet during the trip. He also visited some of Mr Mr Forest’s companies in Katanga and Lubumbashi Zoo that was renovated by none other than Georges Forest.
