Criminal investigation launched into Mayor’s death

The Judicial Authorities have confirmed that a Judicial investigation has been launched into the death of the Mayor of the West Flemish municipality of Anzegem. 48-year-old Claude Van Marcke died on Wednesday evening. He had fallen into a coma after what was to have been a routine operation at the Our Lady Hospital (OLV Ziekenhuis) in the East Flemish city of Aalst.

Friday’s edition of the daily ‘Het Nieuwsblad’ reports that the Judicial Authorities have launched an investigation. This has since been confirmed to VRT News by the Judicial Authorities in Dendermonde (East Flanders).

Mr Van Marcke was well-liked in his municipality Anzegem, where he had been Mayor since 2013. He leaves behind two children.
