Burger King sparks royal ire

Belgian and UK media are reporting that the Belgian royal family has contacted the fast food chain Burger King over an ad that invites members of the public to choose between King Filip and the company's record. The fast food chain its set to open its first Belgian outlet in Antwerp in June. The brand's main European franchise holder acquired the iconic Belgian fast food brand Quick in 2016.

BBC News reports that royal spokesman Pierre Emmanuel de Bauw insisted that the use of the king's image must be approved by the royal family and they had not been asked in this instance. On the website whoistheking.be, King Filip of the Belgians is represented by a cartoon.

"We disapprove of this approach," royal spokesman Pierre Emmanuel de Bauw told BBC News. "Since it is for commercial purposes, we would not have given our authorisation."
