Belgium more than doing its bit
While many countries have failed to provide the level of financial support for Syrian refugees that had been expected of them, Belgium has given more that had been expected of it. That’s according to a study by the North-South NGO Oxfam.
Oxfam has published figures on how much financial aid has been given to help Syrian refugees. Oxfam worked out the logical share each country should give. This was done based on the relative size of their economy.
Most countries were found to have given too little.
However, Belgium formed an exception. Based on Oxfam’s method, Belgium would have been expected to give 40 million euro. However, we have given half as much again 60 million euro.
Other European countries such as Norway and Denmark also score well. They both give thrice the amount that would be expected of them based on their respective economies.
