Terror suspects released
The six suspects were detained on Thursday during raids on homes in Sint-Jans-Molenbeek, Anderlecht, Laken (all Brussels) and Sint-Pieters-Leeuw (Flemish Brabant. The raids were carried out as part of an investigation into an attack that had been planned to take place in the centre of Brussels on New Year’s Eve.
Two other suspects were detained as part of the same investigation on Sunday. The two, Mohamed K. and Saïd S. have both since been remanded in custody for a month. They are both members of the Kamikaze Riders motorcycle club.
The Federal Judicial Authorities say that there were “serious indications” that there were plans to carry out attacks at a number of symbolic places in the capital during the New Year’s celebrations.
During raids of the suspects’ homes police confiscated military clothing. Said S is officially suspected of threatening to carry out a terrorist attack, participating as a leading figure in the activities of a terrorist group and of having recruited people for the purpose of taking part in terrorist activities. Mohamed K is suspected of participating in the activities of a terrorist group and of having threatened to carry out terrorist attacks.
