New cable car ride in Brussels soon

The Brussels government has thrown its weight behind a cable car project at the Heizel. When built the cable car link will connect the Heizel metro station with the new Heizel sports stadium that is being built on today's Car Park C.

A new football stadium is being built on the Heizel's Car Park C. It will also have 10,000 parking spaces, 3,000 of which will be available for commuters. To make the car park more attractive for commuters an easy and quick connection with the Heizel metro station situated a kilometre further away was needed. This will allow commuters to get into town quickly. A quick connection should also encourage people visiting the football stadium to use public transport.

Brussels PM Rudi Vervoort believes a cable car is the right option. A moving pavement was also suggested but there are doubts about its reliability. Extending the metro to the new stadium proved to be too pricy.

What the new cable car link will look like will now be the subject of research and talks. Seats like on a ski lift are apparently not an option. The project should be ready by 2018 when the new stadium opens. It could cost up to 6 million euros.

The cost of constructing this new attraction will be borne by Neo, a joint venture between the City of Brussels and the Brussels Region that is redeveloping the Heizel site.

The Heizel exhibition centre that dates from the legendary Expo 58 World Fair in 1958 already boasted a cable car ride.
