Diesel cars still rule
A total of 288,824 cars were purchased in Belgium in the first 6 months of the year. The number is 1,000 up on the year, says the automobile federation Febiac. Almost 6 in 10 of the newly-registered cars are still diesel cars.
Diesels account for 58.98 per cent of the purchased cars, compared to 38.75 per cent for cars running on petrol and 2.26 per cent for vehicles running on other types of fuel (which equals a mere 6,523 cars).
Diesel engines still rule, but their empire is shrinking. In 2008, they accounted for 79 per cent of the new cars, a number that has been declining steadily.
French cars remain very popular in Belgium, with 3 cars in the top-5. The Renault Mégane is still top of the bill where sales figures are concerned. It is followed by the Volkswagen Golf and Citroën C4. The Renault Clio and the Audi A3 (first top-5 appearance) make up the top-5.
