Next year’s flower carpet to celebrate Japanese relations

The famous Brussels flower carpet will be spread out over Grand Place once again next year, and it will be entirely dedicated to Belgo-Japanese relations. After all, 2016 marks 150 years of diplomacy between Belgium and the land of the rising sun.

The biannual decorative flower exposition will be at Brussels’ Grand Place as of 12 August 2016. Japanese companies will be sponsoring the flourishing tapestry, of which the design will be revealed at the end of May next year.

Brussels’ first flower carpet was created in 1971. Since then it’s become a biannual tradition. About 600,000 begonias will be used to form the showpiece, amounting to 1,800 square metres of floridness. Last year’s theme was Turkey, to celebrate 50 years of Turkish immigration to Belgium.
