Problems here and there as storm sweeps across the country

Thunderstorms accompanied by heavy gusts of wind and heavy rain or hail have caused havoc across Belgium. Trees were uprooted in various places while along the Albert Canal whole containers were lifted by the wind and blown away. Traffic was disrupted here and there, as was public transport.

The VRT's weather presenter Frank Deboosere tweeted a message to warn members of the public against the possible dangers as the storms moved north-east coming from France and the Belgian coast.

The E40 Motorway got inundated between Ghent and Brussels in Erpe-Mere and Aalst, while trees blocked the road between Affligem and Ternat. Fallen trees caused disruption in various places (photos). Rail services were disrupted in Liedekerke (between Ghent and Brussels) after a tree had fallen right on the tracks. Belgian Rail said "a collision could be avoided".

Gales were also seen in the area of the Albert Canal - which links Antwerp to Limburg province. Three empty containers ended up in the water and one on a path along the canal. There were no reports of injuries. The containers could be fished out of the water.
