Record number of participants in charity-coloured Antwerp 10 miles

No less than 42,000 participants ran in the 30th edition of the Antwerp 10 Miles event past Sunday. This was a record turnout, just like in the last four years. Many runners were there to raise funds for charity.

The 30th edition of the Antwerp 10 Miles running event was a success. As always, there were many different courses: several counting five kilometres, one counting 42 kilometres (the Antwerp Marathon), and one counting 16 kilometres or 10 miles. The latter attracted the most participants: about 30.000 people ran the full 10 miles through the city.

Many of the participants were there to raise money for charity. For example, Cunina, which is a Flemish charity that supports children in need from all over the world through godparent projects, was represented by 53 runners. They were there to collect assets to help children in Nepal.

Flemish television presenter, singer and actress Nathalie Meskens came to Antwerp to run on behalf of Cunina. Founder Sophie Vangheel was also there to promote the charity at the finish line. "Normally, we were going to run for the children in Haiti. But after the recent developments around the earthquakes in Nepal, we decided that this catastrophe needs our attention most urgently", explains Mrs Vangheel.

"Right now, I'm getting so many e-mails and text messages from Nepal bringing terrible news. What’s happening there right now is simply horrible", says the Cunina founder. Her organisation was the main charity of the Antwerp 10 Miles.
