Toddler miraculously survives four-floor fall

Last Monday, an 18-month-old toddler fell out of a window on the fourth floor of a building in Schaarbeek. The little boy of Mauritanian descent fell about 20 meters, to land in the back yard. Amazingly, today police confirm that he remained unharmed.

"The girl next door saw Osman fall from the window sill and immediately cried for help", the father of the child told the Flemish daily Het Laatste Nieuws. "When I rushed into the back yard, I couldn't believe my eyes: Osman was crying, he was still alive."

The shock of the toddler's fall was absorbed by the soft grass of the lawn. If he had fallen just a few centimetres closer to the building, he would have landed on the terrace, and the consequences could have been tragic.

Police are now investigating the case, but they assume that it was an accident. Osman had been playing with his elder brother and had probably climbed from his bed onto the window sill himself.

The little boy was kept in the hospital for a while, for close examination. However, by now, he should be back at home with his family. Doctors speak of a miracle.
