Petrol bombs thrown at police in Laken

Several petrol bombs have been hurled at a police station in the Brussels borough of Laken. Fortunately nobody was injured. The police have managed to arrest no fewer than eight suspects.

Riots broke out in the vicinity of the police station last night.

Ilse Van de Keere of Brussels police: "Around 8pm several petrol bombs were thrown at the entrance of the police station. The entrance has been damaged and several windows have been shattered. Nobody is hurt."

Police are questioning the eight suspects that were detained. Police intend to provide more information in the course of the day. The cause of the riots is unclear. As a result of the unrest local transport buses had to be diverted. Calm returned to the area around 9pm.
