10 ski runs opened in Eastern Belgium

Saturday's fresh snowfall was good news for ski lovers. 10 ski runs are open to the public in the German-speaking part of eastern Belgium, the East Cantons. Downhill skiing, cross-country 'langlaufen' or just sleighing, it's all possible. The fresh snow is excellent news for the local tourist industry, which can look back on a successful Christmas holiday.

Only two resorts could be opened yesterday, but this number increased as fresh snowfall came in eastern and southern parts of Belgium. It's especially the German-speaking area, situated at higher altitudes, that offers the most skiiing opportunities.

"We have between 8 and 15 centimetres of snow. The quality of the snow is between average and good", says Claudine Legros of the East Cantons Tourism Office. "Today we are having clear and sunny weather, which is perfect to come over and spend a day here." The new snow comes after a first cold spell last weekend, and after a disappointing winter last year.
