"Massive police checks on 12 December"

Drivers on Belgian roads should be prepared for massive police checks during the morning rush hour on Friday 12 December. The checks will be carried out by police officers affiliated to the liberal police trade that is protesting against the failure to reach a settlement in the dispute over the higher retirement age.

The union is asking its members on traffic duty to carry out checks. The checks could materialise on the roads, but also at airports, on the railways and at ports.

The liberal union warns that the protest could lead to traffic jams and other forms of nuisance, but adds: "Officers are only doing their job in the interest of the safety of road users."

A recent Constitutional Court ruling means that all police officers will now have to wait until the age of 62 in order to retire and receive a full pension. The new centre-right government has also announced plans to increase the retirement age for all to 67 and the coalition agreement does not stipulate any exemption for police officers.

The union points to the 14,000 officers who took part in the big anti-government demo as protesters and argues that the government is "totally ignoring" requests for a specific pensions arrangement for officers.
