11 demonstration rioters detained

The Brussels Local Police detained 11 people suspected of having been involved in the rioting that marred the end of the march against the government’s austerity measures two weeks ago. Four of them have already appeared before an Examining Magistrate. The Judicial Authorities have asked that they remain in custody.

The Judicial Authorities say that they will decide later what, if any, further measures will be taken against the remaining 7 suspects.

More than 100 police officers were injured during the riot, 11 cars were burned out and another 62 vehicles were damaged. The police detained 43 rioters on the day of the demonstration.

One man from Charleroi (Hainaut) that injured 5 police officers will appear in court on 19 December. He has been detained several times in the past for violence at demonstrations. He is also accused of having set of police motorbike on fire during the demonstration on 6 November.

The Brussels Local Police has been able to identify a total of 13 suspects of which 11 were detained today. A spokesperson for the Brussels Judicial Authorities told journalists that "The investigation to identify further suspects will continue. It certainly can’t be ruled out that there will be further arrests in the near future.”
