Doubling in home-jackings

The number of home-jackings in Belgium has doubled in only four years’ time. Figures published by the daily La Dernière Heure show that 226 home-jackings occurred in Belgium during the first six months of the year.

A full sixty percent of home jackings happen in Wallonia. Forty percent of home jacking victims are over 60 years of age. Businesspeople with a lot of cash at home make up twenty percent of all victims.

The federal police's Eddy De Raedt provides a definition of a home jacking: unlike in the event of a burglary there is always a confrontation between perpetrator and victim. Violence is always used and home jackings are always planned.
