Belgium wins friendly against Australia

In Thursday evening’s friendly against Australia, the Belgian football team managed to win their first post-Brazil game. Coach Mark Wilmots was pleased with the 2-0 result they reached in Standard Liège’s Sclessin Stadium: “We played well and deservedly won.”

The friendly against Australia got off to a slow start. However, when Dries Mertens scored a rather awkward goal in the 19th minute, the Belgians took control on the field. Axel Witsel managed to extend their lead in the 78th minute.

The only real threat to their victory was an attempt by Tim Cahill in the first half, which Thibault Courtois managed to save.

Coach Mark Wilmots was pleased with the result. “I saw some good attacks. The first half was nearly perfect, just a few more things need refining. We played well and deservedly won.”
