Marianne Thyssen Belgium’s European Commission candidate

After a long night of discussion, Marianne Thyssen (Flemish Christian democrat) has been put forward as Belgium’s candidate for the new European Commission. The federal coalition negotiators will now look for a liberal for the role of Belgian Prime Minister.

In the Chamber of Representatives, the federal coalition negotiators have appointed Marianne Thyssen as Belgium’s European Commission candidate. Outgoing Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo (Francophone socialist) has relayed this decision to Chairman-elect of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker.

As a trade-off for this prestigious European post, the role of Prime Minister will in all probability be offered to a member of one of the two liberal parties in the new coalition. It is still unclear whether a Francophone or a Fleming will be selected.

Kris Peeters (Flemish Christian democrat) has given up his ambition to become Belgium’s new Prime Minister to allow his party colleague Marianne Thyssen to become our country’s representative in the new European Commission.
