Good and bad news for PM Elio Di Rupo

The confidence that the Belgian citizens are putting in the Di Rupo administration has reached a record high since it was installed almost two years ago. This is the conclusion of a poll carried out by the daily De Morgen and the commercial TV station VTM. The government gets an average score of 5.6 out of 10, the PM himself even fetches 5.9. However, it's not all good news.

The federal government led by Elio Di Rupo (Francophone socialist) had a difficult start. Earlier polls only gave the government a score of 4.9 out of 10. This has grown to 5.6 now, the highest rating since the government kicked off on 6 December 2011 after endless negotiations to form a federal coalition government, and without Flanders's biggest party, the Flemish nationalists of N-VA.

The Premier gets a personal rating of 5.9, but it has to be said that this is mainly due to the support of the Francophones, where he fetched a score of 6.5. In Flanders, he has to be content with 5.5.

However, despite the good ratings, a majority of the Flemish respondents does not want a second term for Di Rupo as Prime Minister. 62 percent opposes the idea. Below the language divide, in Wallonia, 73 percent would like to see Di Rupo continue. This gives an average score of 53 percent of the Belgians that would like to see a second Di Rupo administration installed.
