Results of food hygiene tests available online

In future the results of checks carried out by the Federal Food Safety Agency (FAVV) will be available for all to see on a new website. This means that from now on we will be able to see how well our local butcher, baker, snack bar, pub or restaurant performs. The hospitality industry fears that consumers might interpret the results incorrectly.

The Federal Food Safety Agency (FAVV) carries out regular checks on producers of foodstuffs, abattoirs and shops as well as on local snack bars, fishmongers and butchers.

The checks are carried out to make sure that hygiene rules are being followed. From now on the results of the check can been seen (In Dutch or French) on the www.afsca.be/consumenten/foodweb/
However, the site only gives the final result that is given based on a system of 1 to 5 stars.

Currently only the shops, bars and restaurants that have received a positive evaluation appear on the site. The plan is that the rest will follow after they have received a second visit from FAVV inspectors.
Last year, FAVV carried out checks on just over half of all businesses that deal in food.

Around 70% of those tested were ok, 25% recieved a warning and 4% were given a fine.

Those in the hospitality industry are not pleased with the new website. They see it as yet another way of targeting them.
