"Watch out for too high doses of vitamins and minerals”

The High Council for Health has warned Belgians against taking excessively high doses of vitamins and minerals. Some groups such as pregnant women and young children can benefit from taking extra vitamins and minerals. However, those that eat a varied diet normally get enough vitamins and minerals from their food.

Dr Guy De Backer of the High Council for Health warns excessive daily doses can cause health risks.

"Vitamin E can encourage prostate cancer if taken in excessive doses; too much vitamin C can cause kidney stones. We have now issued recommendations to the manufacturers of food supplements not to exceed certain dosages”.

The High Council for Health advises those with questions about vitamin and mineral supplements to talk to their doctor or their pharmacist.
