No 24-hour general strike on 12 May

The Socialist Trades Union ABVV has decided not to call another general strike 12 May. A proposal calling for strike action against the Federal and Flemish Governments austerity measures was rejected by a majority of 65% to 34%. Most of those that voted for the strike are reported to be from Wallonia and Brussels. 1% of those that voted in the strike ballot abstained.

ABVV has decided to direct its actions to themes such as youth unemployment, issues facing women in the workplace, pensions and cuts resulting from EU policies.

In addition to this the socialist trades union intends to take action for a more just tax system. "Strike action is always there as a weapon that can be used if necessary.”
