A strong third quarter for bpost

The Belgian post office bpost has enjoyed a strong third quarter. The state-owned company made net profits of 52 million euro in the period between 1 July and 30 September. The fall number of letters being sent has been more than compensated for by a growth in the number of packages being sent via bpost.

The volume of packages being sent via bpost between two addresses within Belgium rose by 10.3% in the third quarter of 2015. This is in addition to the 5% growth recorded in the first half of the year.

This more than makes up for the continuing fall in the number of letters. Income from letter deliveries fell by 4.3% during the third quarter and 4.9% during the first half of the year.

Bpost saw its total revenue rise by 0.5% in the third quarter to 569.2 million euro. Revenue from parcels was up by 13 million, while revenue from letters was down 6.5 million euro on the previous quarter.

Bpost’s net profits of 52.7 million euro are down slightly on the 53.8 million euro profits made in the third quarter of 2013. However, this is due to non-operational factors such as fewer post offices buildings being sold off and restructuring cost.
