Michaël Borremans Belgium’s “most expensive painter”

The Fleming Michaël Borremans can now say that he is Belgium’s most expensive painter. His 2011 painting ‘Girl with duck’ was sold for 2.7 euro at an auction held at the London auction house Sotheby's. In a reaction to the high price paid for one of his works, Michaël Borremans said that he was “shocked”.

Michaël Borremans painted "Girl with duck" in 2011. A year later it was sold by the New York gallery to the Chinees-Indonesian collector Budi Tek. It was Budi Tek that sold the painting at a contemporary art auction held a Sotheby’s in London on Thursday.

The price was far in excess of the between 750,000 and 1.35 million euro the painting had been expected to fetch. However, this doesn’t mean that the artist will become mega-rich.

Michaël Borremans will only be entitled to the statutory 12,500 European “droite de suite” that entitles artist to receive a fee on the resale of their works.
