Penis mural must go

The Municipal Cabinet in the Brussels municipality of Sint-Gillis has decided that the large mural featuring male genitalia that has been painted on the side of a house must be removed. As we reported on Wednesday the mural appeared on the side of the house in the Parklaan in Sint-Gillis earlier this week.

The Municipal Cabinet’s decision was announced on Sint-Gillis Council’s Facebook wall on Thursday afternoon. After consultations with local residents a new mural will be painted on the side of the house.

The mural featuring a penis in flaccid state has been the source of no little controversy, not least as it is close to a school. The municipal authorities say that planning permission was not requested for the work and that it is “a temporary piece of street art”.

Consequently the Municipal Cabinet has decided to have the fresco removed. It hopes that this can be done over the next few weeks. However, the municipal authority adds that with the permission of the house-owner a new mural can be painted on the side of the house.

However, this time it will be done according to the book. Local residents will be able to choose the new mural.
