Uberpop to be suspended in Brussels

Uberpop, the most popular service offered by the American transport network company Uber will no longer be available in Brussels from 11:59pm on Wednesday. The announcement that Uberpop is to be scrapped in our capital city was made by Mark McGann, the man responsible for Uber’s European operation.

On 24 September the Commercial Court in Brussels ruled that by allowing its drivers to be paid for carrying passengers without having a licence to do so, Uber was contravening fair trading legislation.

The court declare Uberpop illegal and added that Uber had 21 days in which to make its operation compliant with the law. Failure to do so would result in a penalty payment of 10,000euro/day.

Speaking on Tuesday morning Uber Belgium’s manager Filip Nuytemans said “We have decided to stop our Uberpop service. This is a temporary measure as we have lodged an appeal.”

Mr Nuytens added that UberX that uses professional that have a licence will continue to operate. Uber hopes to expand the UberX platform that currently only has a few dozen drivers.

The September 24 court ruling means that UberPop would no longer be able to operate from next Monday.
