However, it currently contains no information about the bus services provided in Brussels by the Flemish public transport company De Lijn or the Walloon public transport company TEC.
Citymapper says that it hopes to become a trusty travel companion for the urban dweller without a car.
The free app is a GPS and route planner as well as offering the services listed above. An interesting facet of the app is that it tells users where Villo bikes are available and, possibly more important, where there are spaces available to park Villo bikes after use.
Cycling: quick or slower, tranquil routes
The app provides the user with a list of transport options based on their location. Those opting to use public transport are given the options of choosing to use busses only, trains/trams/metro only or all forms of public transport.
Those choosing to cycle are given the choice between quick (and probably busy) and slower, more tranquil routes. Furthermore cyclists and pedestrians are given an estimation of how many calories they might use.
In the footsteps of New York, Paris and Berlin
The app also contains information about the traffic situation and information from the shop, café and restaurant review site Yelp.
Citymapper was first launched in the British capital London a couple of years ago by Azmat Yusuf. It soon become a point of reference for locals and visitors alike. The app is currently also available in New York, Paris and Berlin.
Citymapper is available for Android smartphones and iPhones. Those without a smartphone can acess citymapper via citymapper.com/brussels.
