Brussel-Capital Region celebrates Iris Festival

This weekend is a special weekend in the Brussels-Capital Region. It is this that our bilingual and multi-cultural capital celebrates its Iris Festival. The smallest and youngest of Belgium’s three regions Brussels will be celebrated the Iris Festival for the 26th time. Concerts, street parties and a food truck festival in the city centre are among a host of activities being held across the city during the course of the weekend.

Things got underway on Saturday morning with “Brussels Welcome” an event in which 30 interesting sites that are normally not (always) open to the general public opened their doors.

These include the pawn shop “Berg van Barmhartighid” in the Marollen area of Central Brussels, the water purification plant Brussels North in Haren and our very own VRT tower (photo).

Fan of electronic music can enjoy concerts by Ummet Ozcan and Watermät on the Paliezenplein, near to the Royal Palace, on Saturday evening.

On Sunday soul, pop and funk will take centre stage with concerts from amongst other Sarah Carlier and Babylon Circus.
Elsewhere, numerous Brussels theatre companies will perform on the streets at various locations across the city.

Meanwhile, Europhiles can visit the European Village at the Schuman roundabout. There they can learn more about the European institutions and the role they play in our daily lives. Dance performances will also be held at the village.

Finally, no fewer than 60 food trucks from home and abroad have set up shop on the Keizerinlaan, near to Brussels-Central station.
