Part of Brussels prison to receive Heritage status?
The Brussels municipality of Sint-Gillis has filed an application to protect part of its historic prison building. The local administration is thinking ahead, aiming to avoid the building would be demolished if it would receive a different purpose.
The prison complex of Sint-Gillis was opened in 1884, which makes it over 130 years old. Seen from the air, it has the shape of a star. It boasts two towers at the entrance where it looks like a castle.
Burgomaster Charles Picqué (Francophone socialist) explains that "we filed for a protected status for the entrance, part of the walls, the gaol's central part and also one wing in order to keep the prison's history alive."
