Brussels police seize fireworks worth 15,000 euros

Local Brussels police seized fireworks worth 15,000 euros last week. The fireworks were seized from one single shop. The owner had stored the explosive material illegally in her shop and in a garden shed at her home in Walloon Brabant. All fireworks will be destroyed.

Brussels police received various reports of little incidents concerning fireworks last Tuesday, 23 December. They were caused by minors, who had bought the fireworks in the same shop. Inspectors next checked on the shop and soon noticed how customers bought fireworks in quantities that exceeded the legal limit for private use.

The owner had a permit to store 10 kilograms, but the quantities found on the spot exceeded this at least 4.5 times. They were not properly stored. 35 kilos were seized. Inspectors next moved to her private home, where 6 cubic metres of fireworks were discovered in the garden shed. The woman and her husband did not have any permit to store it, and no security measures had been taken at all.
